MASTER WIN RATINGS PAR CARD

Barry Meadow's Master Win Ratings are the most powerful ratings available

for California races. Each horse's rating considers many factors--among them a
horse's recent speed and pace numbers (adjusted for trips, trouble, and biases),
performance cycle pattern, class analysis, odds in recent races, trainer changes,
and overall racing record. They are designed to project what a horse is going to
do next time out and have been created to help you with your own handicapping
decisions.
At a glance you can see which races look competitive, which favorites look

vulnerable, and which longshots have a good chance to upset. Use our ratings to
help determine your contenders and to help eliminate the non-contenders.
The par numbers are the average winning Master Win Ratings for most

unrestricted open classes at the southern California tracks. Races restricted to
Cal-breds generally have averages 1-3 points below these numbers, as do races with
other restrictions (such as for $10,000 claimers who have not won a race in the
past year). For improving 2- and 3-year-olds, the averages tend to be slightly
lower in May and slightly higher in August.
One way to use this par card is to check how unrated newcomers might stack

up against rated horses. For instance, if a European shipper is entered in a race
in which no one is rated above 17, he will have a very strong chance since the
average winner is rated 19. Or say a fast-working first-time starter enters an
open maiden race in which the par is 15 and the three top-rated horses are 19, 18,
and 17' since the typical winner has an average of 15, this had better be one very
fast newcomer to succeed.
When a horse is rated X, give him a better chance if none of the horses

with numbered ratings have ratings that match the par.
You can also use these numbers to measure race field strengths. One

$20,000 race may have the top three horses at 18, 18, and 17, while another might
have horses rated 15, 15, and 14. So regardless of final times, the first race
attracted a better field than the second.

numbers. Races for 4-year-olds only have averages 1-2 points below.
Par numbers are based on races in southern California and should be used
for southern California races only.
Due to the wide variety in ability of entrants in maiden claiming and
starter races, no par numbers are listed for these races.
